Why We Make Mistakes and Poor Decisions. Thinking, fast and Slow.

video thumbnail
Most of us don’t enjoy thinking hard about a problem and given the choice would rather avoid the mental strain. So why does thinking feel like such hard work? Why do we make stupid mistakes? Is the brain just lazy? Remarkably, the answer might be yes, but why?

This animated video explores the work of Nobel prize-winning psychologist, Daniel Kahneman, and his bestselling book ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’. Kahneman proposes that our decisions are controlled by two interlinked systems called System 1 and System 2. In this video, System 1 and System 2 are portrayed by two characters; the reporter and the editor. The reporter (System 1) does most of the work and makes lightning quick judgements and opinions based on pieces of information it gathers from our senses. But this comes at a price - the reporter is easily fooled and jumps to conclusions based on little evidence. The editor is who people think they are; the conscious rational self that thinks slowly and makes the big decisions. Unfortunately, the editor is lazy and doesn’t have the energy to verify the facts, so it needs to trust the reporter. How we balance the pros and cons of both systems determines whether we make good or bad decisions.
