Multiple studies (like this one): https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/09658210802647009) show that re-reading notes is the most popular study technique by high school students. However, despite so many students doing this, the truth is it's shown to be an ineffective way to study.

Two methods much better are talked about in this video: Active Recall and Spaced Repetition.

Active Recall:

Active recall is when you take a topic you wish to learn, create questions based on that topic, and then repeatedly test yourself on those questions. By forcing your brain to retrieve this information, it ensures that you actively learning it instead of passively reading it. One way of incorporating this into your studies is when you're taking notes, make a list of short questions based on the content. When you go to revise, go to the questions and answer them without reading your notes.

Studies have shown that integrating Spaced Repetition with Active Recall can boost your memory retention.

Spaced Repetition:

Spaced repetition is the opposite of cramming. Flashcards can be an effective tool for practicing this method. Instead of learning information in a short period of time, which can lead to forgetting about it in the short-term, this method focuses on long-term retention. Basically what you do is start learning in intervals close together (Ex. 1 hour or 1 day) then increase the interval (ex. 4 hours or 1 week). Studies recommend starting early in the semester, writing questions on flash cards (Active Recall), and spacing your study sessions out rather than cramming it all into one day.
