Painting spring lilac in watercolor |
|
Watercolor offers a lovely flexibility that you can’t get with any other medium. You can create delicate and soft effects with layering of colors to achieve depth and dimension so easily with just a few tricks. I also like to use watercolour in mast tone on some of the final layers.
In this months Watercolor subscription you should have a set of gorgeous watercolors created by hand to paint these lovely lilacs and I’m going to show you how to make sure that angelic transparency shines through to give a luminous quality to the artwork. It all depends on your level of skill and vision. Use a light wash of watercolor to gentle brush down the petals of the poppies, leaving some areas lighter to create a sense of transparency. Add layers of color to build up the intensity and depth of the poppies, allowing some of the layers to show through to create a translucent effect. Use a fine brush to add details such as the veins in the petals and the delicate stamens in the center of the flowers. Consider adding a background wash to enhance the contrast and make the poppies stand out. I love flicking splatter and creating some grassy foreground as a quick option.
