How Did Romania Unite? | The Two Romanian Unifications

What caused the principalities of Romania to unite? For centuries, the Romanian lands (Transylvania, Wallachia, and Moldavia) were divided between empires but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, they united into a cohesive nation-state. By forging a path that saw them avoid provoking their more powerful neighbours, even while political divide was the norm at home, the people of Romania were able to create their country and reinvigorate their nation.
