You try to dismiss it as a strange coincidence to start with. But then they're just everywhere and it's just too difficult to ignore. For, a majority if not 2/3rds of all suburban villas around Auckland-and there are thousands-seem to be painted in a shade or theme of one of the many jerseys that the New Zealand cricket team has worn at a World Cup. There're the all-grey numbers, the light grey walls with asphalt roof numbers, the expected beige-dominant numbers and of course those that are completely black from top to bottom. Incidentally, the dominant colour you see on the roofs as the flight soars in past the Tasman Sea and over the city of Auckland is black.

Ask around about this seemingly deep connect between cricket and the landscape, and you are met with puzzled looks. "Never noticed that before," is the most common response but some do admit to there being potentially a "subconscious" link to cricket. It kind of though is symptomatic of the relationship that cricket fans in New Zealand share with their team. It's an interesting form of fandom, which ebbs and flows based on the fortunes of the team and also the personnel occupying the more elite posts in the setup.

For most here, the Black Caps are still New Zealand's summer team, and cricket their summer sport. And their World Cup performance last year, where they edged out a strong Indian team and failed to win the trophy, despite "not losing" as the locals love to remind you, has certainly reenergised the love and support for cricket in the country. The England tour that kicked off the summer here only helped take that following up a notch. But then came the tour of Australia, which Kane Williamson himself referred to as a "humbling experience" and though the series was played across the ditch, the fans back home weren't so sure anymore.
