Technology pushing postal services into irrelevance

video thumbnail
When was the last time you wrote and sent a letter, if at all? Do you even know how to get a stamp anymore? Let's face it, technology has made letters to some extent irrelevant because it is a lot easier, and days faster, to send a text message, email or use any social media platform to communicate, than it is to write a letter and post it.

This technology is the reason postal services are dying out, with the government reporting that the number of letters sent last year alone declined by 48.3%, to just 8.2 million. Total courier items sent locally also declined, to stand at 1.63 million items. And as the world celebrates the World Post Day, postas have been urged to innovate in order to keep up with technology and stay in business. Last year, the Postal Corporation of Kenya launched a mobile-based service, dubbed Posta Mkononi, connecting its physical letter boxes to consumers' mobile phones as it moved to increase the use of its services and grow the firm's revenues.
