According to Vladimir Putin, Russia's actions in Ukraine are "a special military operation", aimed at protecting people in eastern Ukraine from fascism.

The version of events being told inside Russia is markedly different to that being told in the West. And the Kremlin's propaganda efforts have intensified as the conflict has worn on.
