President Erdogan has announced a state of emergency for Turkey, that is set to last three months. This news comes as the numbers of those killed by the earthquakes keeps rising. More than six thousand people are known to have died so far.
The disaster has also hit parts of northern Syria, which were already devastated by a decade of brutal civil war. Areas near the Turkish border saw bitter fighting during Syria's armed conflict. The World Health Organization says the movement of aid to these areas is most likely being obstructed. And yet, some lives there are still being saved.
