As the death toll rises past 7000, thousands of Aussies are desperately trying to check in with their loved ones in the Turkey and Syria earthquake. Today spoke with Bulant Omag, who fled the disaster to Adana and his cousin, Hasan Altunbas in Melbourne about the difficulty of trying to reach the rest of their family in Turkey. Bulant recalls the moment his family were woken up to the sounds of walls cracking and attempting to escape the shaking ground in what felt like forever. Hasan Altunbas tells Today hosts Karl and Sarah he’s very grateful his cousin is alive despite nine of their family members have died in the earthquake and more that have still been unaccountable for. Rescuers are still racing to save people trapped under the rubble.
