In the former Yugoslav republics, Mexican films and songs dominated the cultural atmosphere in the 1950s and 1960s during the Cold War. Homegrown mariachi bands with sombrero emerged, singing in local languages where untrained ears might not differentiate it with Spanish originals. With such event, it showed that soft power projection is possible from a Third World country to the other.
