Was the year 536 AD the worst ever? The 6th century boasted many exceptional events, people, and historical contributions. The exception, however, was one year that was particularly burdened with a level of tragedy and strife most historians say surpassed any other moment in history: 536 CE. This was the worst part of the Dark Ages.

Year 536 is known as the worst year in history! In 536, a massive volcano erupted in Iceland. The eruption threw millions of tons Ash into the air the Ash quickly spread around the world and blocked sunlight from reaching the surface.

Due to the lack of sunlight all the crops failed and the average Earth's temperature came down. Temperatures in the summer fell to just 1.5°C to 2.5°C. The darkness lasted for more than 18 months and millions of people were starved to death. At the same year, Bubonic Plague also started leading to an estimated 25-50 million deaths which aided the collapse of eastern Roman Empire.
