Supporters of the late Alexei Navalny have called on Russians to come out at a “Noon against Putin” protest to show their dissent against a leader they cast as a corrupt autocrat. The idea of the movement is for protesters to arrive at polling stations en masse at 12 midday and either vote against the president or spoil their ballot. “Today we want to say to all of us - noon is the very beginning,” the “Noon Against Putin” initiative wrote on their Telegram early Sunday. Yulia Navalnaya, widow of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, called on Russians to join an election day protest at noon called 'noon against Putin' on March 17 and to vote against President Vladimir Putin or spoil their ballots. She said in a video address that she will continue her husband's fight for a free Russia, and called on supporters to stand with her against Vladimir Putin. In a YouTube video, Navalnaya said she had drawn hope from the huge crowds that turned out last week for the funeral of her husband, who died in an Arctic penal colony on Feb. 16, and who since then have submerged his grave in a sea of flowers. She urged people to join the March 17 action that Navalny, Russia's best known opposition figure, had called for shortly be died. His idea was that people could register a protest, without any risk of arrest, by all turning out en masse at the same time on election day in cities across the country. Alexei Navalny was a Russian opposition leader, lawyer, anti-corruption activist, and political prisoner. He organised anti-government demonstrations and ran for office to advocate reforms against corruption in Russia, and against President Vladimir Putin and his government. Navalny was a Russian Opposition Coordination Council member. He was the leader of the Russia of the Future party and founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. He was recognised by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience, and was awarded the Sakharov Prize for his work on human rights.
