Yin Yang is a popular symbol in Asian culture that is often used to represent the balance between two opposing forces, two complementary energies or two contrasting elements. Yin Yang is often referred to as “yin-yang”, "yin-and-yang", "yin yang" or "yinyang". It can also be spelled as "Yang yin".
The philosophy of Yin Yang was first proposed by the Chinese philosopher Zou Yan (305 BC - 240 BC). The symbol of Yin Yang is an ancient concept which represents how everything has both masculine and feminine parts. It dictates how the world is organized. Yin represents everything that is dark, female, passive, and gloomy while Yang represents everything that is bright, male, and active. It’s represented as a black and white symbol. The black part on the left side represents Yin (dark, cold, female, negative, passive, earth) while the white side on the right represents Yang (light, hot, male, positive, active and heaven). The symbol of yin and yang is used as a spiritual sign of balance and unity. The two opposites are complementary, their interaction produces the harmony that sustains life. In China, the yin-yang symbol is a representation of the interaction between two energies that can be seen as contrary or complementary. The black and white colors signify different aspects of life, the sun and moon respectively. Yin-yang is a concept that dates back to ancient times. The concept of yin-yang has been applied in many areas of Chinese philosophy and culture such as Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, traditional Korean culture and Japanese culture. In Feng Shui it represents how human beings should live in harmony with the universe. In Taoism and Confucianism, yin and yang are seen as two opposing but complementary forces that operate in the world. They are thought to have a balanced interaction that creates a stable world.
