Taoism and Acceptance | Chuang Tzu and Perfect Happiness

video thumbnail
Acceptance is a pretty popular concept within the philosophy of Daoism. One might even say that it’s a radical acceptance, sometimes sounding similar to the philosophy of stoicism. The book of Chuang-Tzu contains many stories and maxims on this subject that highlight how one may obtain this acceptance.
One story tells of how Chuang-Tzu’s wife died and he seems relatively undisturbed. He explains to a friend that he accepts this because of the transformative nature of the world. His wife was nothing, then she was born and became something, and now she is nothing yet again. Obviously it seems difficult to do this practically, but simply reflecting upon the changes of the world may better prepare you for future changes that may not be in your favor.
Another connection between Daoism and acceptance comes in the form of the unity of all things. Everything is Dao, therefore, everything is connected. This may lead to a sense of “oneness” with everything else in the world which may lead to a greater acceptance of those things that seem separate but are rather connected to yourself. #philosophy #taoism #daoism
