Hi there! New to Field Artillery Redlegs? If so, here's what you need to know -- We like to make things go boom a LOT, so we use this channel to find like minded individuals that are interested in doing the same by commissioning as Field Artillery Officers!

The Field Artillery has three unique leadership opportunities for lieutenants: Fire Support Officer (FSO), Fire Direction Officer (FDO), and Platoon Leader (PL). The Field Artillery also has a myriad of duty assignment locations and professional military education (SCHOOLS) opportunities for lieutenants. But first, more about duty positions.

The FSO is embedded with maneuver commanders from Armor, Infantry, Calvary and Aviation units. Additionally, Fire Support Officers work within the 75th Ranger Regiment and the Special Forces Community. The job of the FSO is to lead his Fire Support Team and violently plan, coordinate and execute lethal and non-lethal joint fires within the law of land warfare, whether that is mortars, artillery, close air support, army attack aviation or naval gun fire, the FSO brings it to the fight, setting conditions for the maneuver commander to fight and win.

The FDO is responsible for all technical and tactical Fire Direction Center (FDC) Operations. An FDO verifies target location, accuracy of firing data, and determines the best method for attacking any given target. The Fire Direction Officer receives fire missions from the Fire Support Officer and Team and then engages indirect fire assets to support the mission.

PLs lead up to 54 soldiers and are responsible for up to 5 firing platforms. Field Artillery Platoon Leaders are capable of firing and producing more combat damage than any other lieutenant on the battlefield. As a PL, you are solely responsible for establishing and maintaining the firing capability of your platoon.

The Field Artillery not only offers multiple leadership opportunities, but also many high demand duty locations. We are located all over the world, from the mountains of South Korea to the deserts of the Middle East and everywhere in-between. You’ll have the opportunity to serve within any of the 10 active divisions, 8 National Guard divisions and multiple Field Artillery Brigades between the two in the United States Army.
