James Howard: The History of Black Industrial Designers |

As an innovator and designer, Mr. Howard has amassed more than a dozen patents on everything from household appliances to cardiovascular delivery systems to neonatal pressure relief valves. For nearly 15 years, 1987 to 2002, Howard owned and operated one of the country's leading minority owned industrial design firms -Howard Design. His clients include many fortune 100 companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Colgate Palmolive, and Coca-Cola. He counts as one of his more unique client experiences - serving for nearly six years as an independent design consultant to the CIA. From 2002 onward, Howard has devoted his life to higher education and to teaching design and creative skills to the general public.
For 15 years he served as a full time tenured professor at a local community college where he developed a precedent setting Design program intended to facilitate the transfer of credits to four and five year design institutions. His latest passion has led him to the creation of Entrepreneurial U. LLC.
