#French #scientist Emmanuelle Marie Charpentier won this year's #Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with her American colleague Jennifer Doudna for developing a revolutionary method of altering DNA. Their transformative tool is called the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system. It has, for the first time, enabled scientists to make precise changes in the long DNA stretches that make up the code of life for many organisms, including people. The method has been used to transform agriculture, aid new cancer therapies and help cure inherited diseases. Charpentier and Doudna also made history as the first ever pair of women to receive the Nobel Prize for Chemistry together. Tian Wei had a chance to speak to Ms Charpentier, who is also the Founding Scientific and Managing Director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens, in Berlin, and they talked about the path that led to her Nobel Prize-winning career, the Covid-19 pandemic, and what it is like to be a woman in her field.
