Family Stories, Secrets and Survival: Dr. Judith Landau at TEDxVailWomen

video thumbnail
Dr. Judith Landau tells the story of trauma and recovery through generations and gives clues along the way for healthier families. Trauma is inherent to the human condition. The key to whether one experiences destruction or empowerment in the wake of trauma lies in how we relate to our trauma -- the intergenerational stories we tell, the secrets we keep, and the way those stories are framed. The health of future generations is more dependent on the stories we tell today than we may be aware. At this crucial juncture in the human story, the choice to draw upon feminine values and principles in relating to our stories, could be the difference that saves our children.

Landau, a child, family and community neuropsychiatrist, family therapist and former professor of psychiatry and family medicine, has specialized in the relationship between trauma and resilience for more than 30 years. Her cross-cultural exploration of addiction, HIV/AIDS, PTSD, Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, and natural- and human-made mass disasters, have taught her that the keys to our resilience lie in our capacity for positive connectedness across generations. Dr. Landau's extensive body of work embodies the feminine principles of relationship, respect and love as essential healing tools of future generations. As co-developer of the Evidence-Based, Best-Practice ARISE® Intervention with more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and books to her name, Dr. Landau is an internationally sought speaker, teacher and consultant. Her work in more than 100 countries has included consultations to UN, WHO, NIMH, NIDA, NIAAA, SAMHSA and several international governments including Kosovo, Argentina, South Africa, Hungary, Bosnia, and Taiwan. She is recipient of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy's award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy's award for Innovative Contribution to Family Therapy and the 1993 People's Choice award for her book AIDS, Health and Mental Health.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
