A few days ago a list of AI experts, Software Innovators, Scientists and Founders of some of our most successful and influential high-tech companies signed a letter asking for a pause in AI research. This list included people like Elon Musk (SpaceX, Tesla, Twitter), Steve Wozniak (Apple Founder), Max Tegmark (Theoretical Physicist), Grady Booch (Software Innovator, and AI researcher) and many, many more. AI is advancing at an astonishing rate and is already capable of super-human performance in a wide range of narrow fields. This is soon to change, as what is called “multi-modal-AI” is starting to happen now, that is AI that is focused on more than one category of tasks.

AI’s are already training better AI’s. We may be rapidly approaching the “AI singularity” at which point there will be an “intelligence explosion” and AI systems will be better than humans at almost everything. The letter asked for a pause, a time to take a breath and figure out how to make this remarkable step more safely. This could be the best thing to ever happen to us as a species, or the worst.
