Living the Legacy: The Northwestern Hawaiian Fisheries is the first episode of a series documenting the history of US Pacific Islands fisheries. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are a string of remote, largely uninhabited islands and atolls spanning a thousand miles. They were discovered by Polynesians around AD 1000 and contain 70 percent of the recorded reefs of the United States. Through oral histories and archival film, viewers learn about the 1920s pearl oyster fishery, 1950s near-shore and akule fisheries and current limited-entry bottomfish and lobster fisheries managed under the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.
