Protecting and promoting women in democracy is a global imperative. Research shows that gender equality and democracy are mutually reinforcing; women’s political participation results in greater responsiveness to citizen needs and a marked increase in civil rights and political liberties. However, significant challenges remain, and as democracy comes under attack around the world, so too does gender equality.
