|
Ambassador Ajay Bramdeo, Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations, delivered this keynote speech at the Migration Policy Centre’s Annual Conference 2019 on ‘Migration between Africa and Europe: Knowledge Production, Attitudes, and Governance’.
The conference focused on the relationships between knowledge production, attitudes and governance on migration between Africa and Europe. It addressed three broad questions: what is the use of research in public debates and policy-making on migration between Africa and Europe? Why are there such large gaps between migration debates and migration realities, and how can these gaps be reduced? To explore these questions, the conference makes connections between knowledge production, attitudes and governance. Key themes discussed included: migration, foreign aid and development; public attitudes to and governance of migration; regional cooperation; the role of cities and the private sector; border security, trafficking and smuggling; and, the effects of environmental and climate change.
