Can the Spartans hold back the Persian tide? Let's find out in Total War Rome II!

The historical Battle of Thermopylae was fought in 480 BC between the forces of King Leonidas of Sparta and Xerxes I of Persia. Although there were only 300 Spartan warriors, they were accompanied by approximately 6,000-7,000 warriors from other Greek city-states.

Together, they faced off against a force rumoured to have numbered over one million soldiers. Herodotus, a contemporary writer, put the Persian army strength as one million and went to great pains to describe how they were counted in groups of ten thousand at a review of the troops. Simonides went as far as to put the Persian number at three million. Today, it is considered to have been much smaller. Scholars report various figures ranging between about 100,000 and 150,000 soldiers.

Either way, the battle has become one of history’s most famous last stands and has since passed into legend, being immortalised not only in countless renaissance works but also in Frank Miller’s graphic novel and the Hollywood movie adaptation.

Today, we recreate the battle in Total War: Rome II! Can the horde of Persians overwhelm the brave Greeks? Or will the 300 Spartans rewrite history?
