Twenty years after being removed from power in a U.S.-led invasion, Taliban militia swept into Afghanistan's capital of Kabul, where approximately 6 million people reside, facing little resistance from Afghan government forces. Afghanistan's president, Ashraf Ghani, left the country as the U.S. Embassy evacuated diplomatic personnel. Ghani said on Facebook that it was "a hard choice," but that he decided to leave to prevent bloodshed. He signed off with "Long Live Afghanistan." This afternoon President Biden delivered an address to the American people on the situation in Afghanistan and defended his decision to rapidly withdraw troops, citing the deal his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, made with the Taliban as one of the main reasons. Biden said the war has been passed on to four US presidents before him, two Republican and two Democrat. He acknowledged the Afghan government's fall was quicker than expected because Afghan leaders and military gave up.
