(thiamazole)
A thioamide, anti-thyroid drug used to treat hyperthyroidism including Graves disease, toxic multinodular goiter, and thyrotoxic crisis. It decreases the production of thyroid hormones. It is taken by mouth. Full effects may take a few weeks to occur. (Common side effects) • fever, sore throat • skin rash, itchiness • joint and muscle pain • swelling • hair loss • dizziness • nausea, vomiting • abdominal pain. (Severe side effects) • agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia • vasculitis • liver failure, acute pancreatitis • choanal atresia (prenatal exposure during the first trimester of pregnancy) • aplasia cutis congenita (prenatal exposure) • goiter (prenatal exposure) |
