If you think the narcissist wants you to always fail, you are correct. You are not crazy for thinking that, no matter what the narcissist might tell you. Narcissists set you up for failure so that they can feel better about themselves. When you fail, they can consider themselves the more superior person. They can also use your failure against you in the future when they need to inflate their narcissistic supply that might be running low. In their game of control and manipulation, the narcissist must always be the one determining the rules of the game. They are masters at impression management to protect against narcissistic injury. When narcissists make you feel guilty after a failure that they led to happening, they remain in control of your emotions and responses. Narcissistic abuse can be through the silent treatment, rage, or any other control tactic. No matter what, however, it is a toxic relationship because the narcissist is abusive and has no interest in changing. You are never good enough for the narcissist because the narcissist can’t control you if you feel content. If you think “my partner blames me for everything” or “I can’t do anything right” then you are likely feeling trapped in a relationship where you are not valued and respected. The emotional abuse from the narcissist, or someone with narcissistic personality disorder, will never change if the narcissist doesn’t want to, or see a need to change. If you feel like you are being set up for failure, don’t gaslight yourself and trust you likely are if you are interacting with a narcissist.
