Baltimore Police have declared reports of a man being shot at North and Pennsylvania Ave are “unfounded” after a Fox News report stating that a black man was shot by officers.

Fox News has since apologized for the error.

Lt. Col. Melvin Russell said the man was stopped while he was walking along the street because he was seen with a handgun on one of the department’s closed circuit TVs, CBS News reported. Russell added that a brief foot chase ensued when officers responded.

However, the man’s own revolver went off went he reached for it and dropped it on the ground, police said according to CNN. Officers arrested the man and recovered the weapon, which officers found contained three cartridges — one of which was spent, indicating the weapon had been fired.

One reporter said EMTs later arrived and took the suspect away on a stretcher, CNN reported.

A crowd confronted a line of police officers in riot gear near the scene of the incident following Fox News’ erroneous report, the Washington Post reported.
