Genealogy Series, 2 of 7: Mapping the 1950 Census: Census Enumeration District Maps at the National Archives by Brandi Oswald
A census enumeration district was an area that could be covered by a single enumerator, or census taker, in one census period. Enumeration districts varied in size from several city blocks in densely populated urban areas to an entire county in sparsely populated rural areas. This presentation will focus on locating and using census enumeration district maps, with an emphasis on maps from the 1950 census. ⇒ Presentation Slides/Handout: https://www.archives.gov/files/calendar/genealogy-series/2022/2022-03-16-presentation-oswald.pdf ⇒ Live Captioning: https://www.streamtext.net/player?event=JobNo.18346-NARA.1950Census ⇒Transcript (from captioning): Request from KYR@nara.gov ⇒ Event Evaluation Form: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KYREventEval ⇒ 2022 Genealogy Series web page: https://www.archives.gov/calendar/genealogy-series/2022 ⇒ 2022 Genealogy Series playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLugwVCjzrJsXFn9KliguHFDLm8l-S5Vo9 00:00 - Welcome 01:44 - Introduction to Mapping the 1950 Census 02:34 - Mapping the 1950 Census - What is an Enumeration District? 06:03 - Why are Enumeration Districts helpful to researchers? 10:46 - Enumeration Districts - Types and Examples 12:13 - Limitations of Enumeration District Maps 14:01 - Changes to Enumeration Districts and Examples 15:26 - How to Locate and Access Enumeration District Maps 16:39 - Regarding Maps from earlier than 1940 18:09 - Enumeration District Descriptions 18:41 - 1950 Census Website and Additional Resources 19:16 - Closing, Survey, Other Resources 20:24 - Questions and Answers in the chat #1950Census #KnowYourRecords #GenieSeries2022 |
