The DARK SIDE of the Professional Footballers Life

DEPRESSION & SUICIDE

Perhaps, the most common thing that pulls professional footballers deep, deep into the dark side is depression. According to FIFPro, 1 in 3 professional footballers has suffered from depression at one point or the other.

And because of how society is about mental health, and the belief that footballers who earn a lot of money cannot be depressed, many choose to not talk about it. And this has led to many fatal endings.

ROBERT ENKE

Depression, as we know, is a real illness, and it, many times, leads to death by suicide. As was the case of Robert Enke. Robert was a German goalkeeper who played for big clubs all around Europe including Barcelona, Borussia Monchengladbach, Benfica, Fenerbahce, and Hannover 96.

ANDREAS BIERMANN

Robert Enke’s suicide inspired many footballers to get vocal about their struggles with depression and other mental disorders. One of these footballers was Andreas Biermann.

The German footballer who had been battling depression for a long time said he was prompted to go public after Enke’s suicide. But even this was not enough to get Andreas the help he needed.

Andreas attempted suicide 4 times. Sadly, he was successful on his 4th attempt. He was just 33.

MEDIA & PAPARAZZI

Luis Suarez left Liverpool in 2013 in what was a shock move that many did not see coming. Suarez was very comfortable in Liverpool. He loved the club and he was idolized by the fans. However, when speaking about why he left in an interview, Suarez blamed the media.

INJURIES THAT LEAD TO ABUSE

There are a number of footballers, both current and retired, who battled a lot with recurring injuries. And for many of them, it was pure hell. Apart from the physical pain they felt, their woes were compounded by abuse from fans of their own clubs.

MICAH RICHARDS

Micah Richards, who is now a football pundit, was once a professional footballer who played for Manchester City and Aston Villa. At Villa, he really struggled with injuries and fitness, and because of that, he did not get to play much for the club. According to him, he felt like a ghost there, because of his injury.

DISCRIMINATION

In the age of social media, discrimination against players based on sexual orientation or, more commonly, race, is, sadly, very rampant.

Many players have been victims of abuse on and off the pitch simply because of the color of their skin.

It is very sad how very common discrimination is in football. It has been going on for decades, and still in 2021, it is still a thing. A huge thing.

SEXUAL ASSAULT

Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably one of the best players to ever grace the pitch still has an open sexual assault case in court.

Ryan Giggs, another Manchester United legend was recently charged with assaulting two women, one of whom is his ex-girlfriend. Gylfi Sigurdsson was recently suspended by Everton and arrested following allegations that he was talking explicitly with a minor, and Benajmin Mendy has been accused of four counts of rape and sexual assault. And this is just in the year 2021 alone.
