Hashimoto's Symptoms list (how & why your symptoms change over time)

video thumbnail
This Hashimoto's symptoms list explains why patients with Hashi's struggle. You'll also learn about Hashimoto's flare ups and what causes them.

There are 4 main categories of symptoms that patients with Hashimoto's can experience. These symptoms of Hashimoto's change based on a number of factors which are important for you to understand.

You should also be aware that Hashimoto's symptoms can CHANGE and FLUCTUATE over time! It's possible for you to be hypothyroid and then hyperthyroid and then back to hypothyroid. This roller-coaster of symptoms can make it difficult for patients to really understand what is happening in their bodies.

I have broken up the symptoms of Hashimoto's into 4 main categories:

#1. Hypothyroid symptoms.
MOST patients with Hashimoto's will experience predominately hypothyroid symptoms throughout the progression of their disease. Hypothyroid symptoms come from DAMAGE to the thyroid gland. The more damage to the thyroid gland more hypothyroid you will feel.

Symptoms in this category include an increase in weight, a decrease in energy, an increase in hair loss, a decrease in body temperature, a decrease in heart rate, an increase in depression, and cold interolance.

#2. Hyperthyroid symptoms.
SOME patients with Hashimoto's may ALSO experience the symptoms of Hashimoto's periodically throughout the progression of their disease.

Hyperthyroid symptoms include weight loss, low energy, increased heart rate, decrease body temperature, hair loss, anxiety, tremors, and heat intolerance.

Patients with Hashimoto's can go in and out of hyperthyroid and hypothyroid symptoms depending on their body.

#3. Euthyroid.

Occasionally, but not often, you can feel just fine despite having elevated antibodies.

#4. Immune system mediated symptoms.

Lastly, patients with Hashimoto's can ALSO experience symptoms associated with immune dysfunction. These symptoms stem from issues with the immune system which then trigger damage to the thyroid gland.

Symptoms in this category include:
Rash, flu-like symptoms, mild fever, headaches, malaise, constantly getting sick, feeling run down, slight depression, and mild joint pain.

These symptoms indicate that your immune system is flaring and may be a sign of a Hashimoto's flare-up.

When you have a Hashimoto's flare-up you can experience the symptoms of hypo/hyperthyroidism PLUS the symptoms of immune dysfunction (listed above).
