Prince Andrew's move from damaged goods to return to royal fold after decisive intervention. The emotional turmoil Prince Andrew has endured over the past four years has helped make him stronger, a source close to the Duke has said.

Prince Andrew's mental health has deteriorated significantly in the four years since his disastrous interview with Emily Maitlis on BBC Newsnight, which led to his retreat from royal life.

The king's brother, 63, has since been largely excluded from the royal family. He was banned from major events such as Garter Day and not allowed to join company at Buckingham Palace balcony photo shoots.


But he was able to attend private family events such as Christmas and Easter services. Losing his job, then his military titles and HRH status, took a heavy toll on Andrew, but he is finally starting to come out the other side.


A source close to Andrew told the Daily Express that he had gone from damaged goods to a better place, adding that the emotional turmoil he had gone through had helped him become stronger.


They said: He has a number of trusted confidants who have provided Andrew with emotional support. His family also helped him.

Andrew understands his role now and knows he can never be a full-time royal again, the source said, but he still wants to be there. King Charles reportedly approves of this position, although his son and heir, Prince William, remains unconvinced.


Earlier this year, a royal expert said Andrew was struggling to accept the fact he would no longer be allowed to play a public role at annual events such as the Order of the Garter procession and Trooping the Color.

Earlier this year, Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty Magazine, said: Remember, he has never known anything other than the army and the king, and he is not adaptable, he is not popular, and therefore he was incapable of anything.

But the support of his close friends and family over the past few months has put him in a better situation.

Andrew was forced to resign as a working member of the royal family in 2019 over his association with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of having sex with Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

The allegations which he has vehemently and repeatedly denied were revealed in Florida court documents in April 2015. It says Ms Giuffre was forced to have sex with the royal while she had 17 years old below the age of consent under Florida law and that she was the guest of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

The decision to stand down from public office came shortly after his infamous BBC Newsnight interview, in which he said he could not have had sex with Ms Giuffre because, like her, he was after a visit to the Pizza Express in Woking with his family.

In January 2022, Andrew's military titles and royal patronages were returned to the Queen and he was stripped of his HRH status.

The move was made because he was facing a civil lawsuit in the United States over sexual assault allegations. Ms Giuffre claimed the Duke abused her on three occasions in the UK and US when she was a minor under US law.
