CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The American Heart Association will be kicking off the "Go Red for Women" campaign Wednesday, February 1, and will be looking for a few good women to share stories of survival.
The Go Red for Women campaign is an important reminder for everyone that heart disease is the number one killer of women and it can happen to anyone at any age at any place. Since February is heart awareness month, they are looking to share more stories under "#reddressstories." The Red Dress campaign took on extra meaning to Sharon Shaw when while working in health care she recalls, "We were getting ready for our Go Red luncheon, about ten minutes before the luncheon I felt very much overheated and I stepped out in the hallway and had my heart attack in the hallway before the Go Red luncheon started." Now she is a passionate advocate for women's heart health as a survivor with a message for all women leading busy lives, "You just need to slow down and listen, and that day I listened." Robin Gehlmann understands Sharon's passion. She's a vice president for Macy's, the national sponsor for the American Heart Associaton's Red Dress campaign. She survived her own heart rhythm event. Gehlmann, VP & store manager at the Kenwood Macy's, shared, "Because of the fact that I am a heart health survivor, I love our dresses." The red dresses and red pins sold in February help raise money for women's heart research. As part of the campaign the American Heart Association is also asking for people's red dress stories; a few of the things that people might have learned as a heart survivor that could help other women learn about the disease. |
