Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is an upcoming action-adventure film directed by James Mangold, who also co-wrote the script with Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and David Koepp. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, this movie serves as the fifth and final installment in the Indiana Jones film series, following the events of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" released in 2008. The legendary Harrison Ford returns to portray the archaeologist Indiana Jones, accompanied by familiar faces such as John Rhys-Davies reprising his role as Sallah, as well as a new ensemble cast including Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.

Unlike its predecessors, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny marks a departure from the directorial and writing involvement of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. However, Spielberg and Lucas assume the roles of executive producers for the film. Additionally, the distribution rights for this installment belong to Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, as Disney acquired the future sequel rights when it obtained Lucasfilm. However, Paramount Pictures retained the distribution rights to the first four films and received a residual associate credit as part of the agreement. Discussions for a fifth Indiana Jones film started as early as the late 1970s, with Lucas and Spielberg negotiating with Paramount for four sequels to "Adventurers of the Lost Ark" in 1981. While Lucas began exploring storylines for a fifth film in 2008, the project faced numerous delays. Ultimately, producer Kathleen Kennedy took charge of the project in 2012 when she assumed the role of president of Lucasfilm.

The film's development was put on hold as the company focused on the Star Wars trilogy sequel. In 2016, David Koepp was hired to write the screenplay for the fifth Indiana Jones film, initially targeting a release date in 2019. However, due to several script rewrites, the release was repeatedly delayed. In 2018, Jonathan Kasdan replaced Koepp as the screenwriter, although Koepp later returned in 2019 before eventually departing the project. Initially, Spielberg was set to direct the film, but he stepped down in 2020, leading to James Mangold taking over as the director. Filming commenced in June 2021, taking place in various locations including the UK, Italy, and Morocco, and concluded in February 2022. With an estimated production budget of nearly $300 million, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" stands as the most expensive film in the franchise and one of the most costly movies ever made.

In June 2016, Steven Spielberg confirmed that the iconic composer John Williams, who created the music for the previous Indiana Jones films, would return to compose the score for the fifth installment. As requested by James Mangold, Williams premiered one of his compositions, Helena's Theme, at the Hollywood Bowl on September 2, 2022.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will debut out of competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023, with a U.S. theatrical release date of June 30, 2023.

Synopsis:
In 1969, American archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones lives against the backdrop of the space race. Jones is uncomfortable with the fact that the U.S. government has recruited former Nazis to help him beat the Soviet Union in the competition to go into space. His goddaughter, Helena Shaw, accompanies him on his journey. Meanwhile, Jürgen Voller, a member of NASA and former Nazi involved in the moon landing program, wants to make the world a better place as he sees fit.
