My book, Understanding Superhero Comic Books available at https://a.co/d/8ZSTMh8 & https://mcfarlandbooks.com/product/understanding-superhero-comic-books/.
Key creators pioneered the narrative scope of the superhero comic book, Jerry Siegel, Julius Schwartz, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Jim Starlin, John Byrne, Frank Miller, and Alan Moore. After Siegel and Shuster created the first superhero, Superman from various proto-superhero elements, each successive creator strove to make their successive superheroes more relatable and realistic while navigating economic and political pitfalls. Eventually, the genre reached a plateau when the superheroes were so real that they weren't heroic anymore, prompting the industry to constantly focus on modernizing comic books or portraying their stories in film and television to stay fresh for new audiences. This among many other topics is carefully laid out in my book with over 1200 citations, "Understanding Superhero Comic Books" available to order at McFarlandBooks.com.
