Removing the Beam from Thine Eye Acknowledging and Addressing Bias in Mental Health Clinicians |
|
Presenter: John Gordon, BS
Description: We review research on the extent to which mental health stigmatization plays out within the mental health profession itself, and what that might mean for those seeking help. Emphasis will be on empirical data characterizing clinician attitudes and behaviors toward the most stigmatized diagnoses (e.g., schizophrenia) and what we may safely conclude about their effects on vulnerable client populations. Attention will also be paid to the latest research on attempts to mitigate the negative impacts of ‘insider bias’, highlighting common elements of the most successful interventions. |
