Afghan government forces are planning a counteroffensive in the country's north after losing ground to the Taliban. The militant group has captured a key district in their former stronghold of Kandahar after fierce fighting. The Taliban has stepped up its offensive in recent months, recapturing dozens of districts. All of this comes just two days after US and NATO forces vacated their main air base near Kabul, 20 years after first arriving. Some experts have warned that the power vacuum could pose an international threat.
