Xcel Energy’s Hiawatha Project was designed to meet the growing need for electricity in south Minneapolis, while also supporting continued economic development within the city. The project consists of two 115-kilovolt underground transmission lines along 28th Street East in south Minneapolis and new substations near the Hiawatha corridor and at Oakland Ave South.

Not only was there a high degree of internal teamwork to plan and build the Hiawatha project but significant collaboration occurred among the City of Minneapolis, neighborhoods and Xcel Energy. Since completion in late 2014, the Hiawatha West Substation Enclosure won a 2015 Minneapolis Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects, which called it “an unprecedented Xcel Energy effort, driven by community feedback, to integrate public art with infrastructure in Minneapolis.” In December 2015, the Hiawatha West and Midtown Substation Enclosures received more recognition as the 2015 AIA Minnesota Honor Award for substation design.
