The field of digital security is over forty years old, and yet our losses in cyberspace are increasing exponentially. Security vendors and politicians say we need to increase spending, develop more technology, and look to the future. This discussion takes an alternative view, looking to the past to explain why we are in this situation and offer a way forward. Dr. VanPutte is an avid writer and teaches information security at The Ohio State University. He’s served as the Director of the Army Artificial Intelligence Center, Deputy Director of Operations for what became US CyberCommand, DARPA Program Manager, and has consulted with government and commercial entities on all aspects of cyber conflict.
