Stephen Richards Covey was born on October 24, 1932, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was raised as a child on an egg farm in a suburban environment. He exhibited a profound interest in athletics, but his career was cut short because of the degeneration of his legs because of which he had to use crutches for three years as a teenager. He faced this challenge with the support of his parents. Mr. Smart is of the view that it was the real start of the making of a legend. Later, Covey entered the University of Utah at 16 years age and got a bachelor's degree in business administration. Afterward, he earned an MBA from Harvard University. He also got a doctorate in religious education and started to teach his self-help ideas at Brigham Young University. He used to lecture more than 1000 students at one time. In 1983, he started Covey Leadership Center as a training and consulting company in Provo, Utah. He got a global following and readership when wrote “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” in 1989. He was pleasantly surprised by this success because as per his own understanding, he simply wrote what is quite instinctive and common sense. Later, he himself summed up this phenomenon in these words, “What is common sense isn’t common practice.” We need an external stimulus to awaken positive instincts. That’s why 25 million copies of this book are sold worldwide. Consequently, he has inspired generations globally. But, the principles he has described in his book are simply common sense.
