It's very possible it served as a punisher instead of sensory extinction or some combination of both.

Learners with autism often engage in self-stimulatory behaviors which are automatically reinforced. Sensory extinction as an applied behavior analysis (ABA) treatment resulted in a massive change in my son's quality of life after whe began this behavior intervention.
