Canada announces new military aid for Ukraine, sanctions on Russia | FULL

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new military aid for Ukraine on Tuesday, including 21,000 assault rifles and more than 2.4 million rounds of ammunition. He also said new sanctions would be applied against 14 Russian individuals and 34 entities, such as security targets linked to the Wagner Group. Nine entities related to Belarus' financial sector would also see sanctions.

Trudeau also sidestepped a question on whether Canada was in a proxy war with Russia through the conflict with Ukraine, but said that Russia's choice to "arbitrarily redraw lines on a map" and violate the UN Charter should be of "real concern to everyone around the world."

He said supporting and "standing unequivocally" Ukraine is the "right thing to do," and added there are authoritarian dictators globally looking at Russia's invasion to see if President Vladimir Putin succeeds for them to potentially do the same to a neighbouring country.

The comments came as Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal was visiting Canada. During a press conference he thanked Trudeau and the country for the support of his own nation, while also pressed for more help in the form of weapons and money.

Canada has contributed billions of dollars in economic and military aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded its neighbour in February 2022. That includes a $2.4-billion loan announced in last month’s federal budget, as well as tanks, armoured vehicles and ammunition.
