During the first world war, the Serbian campaign by the Austro-Hungarian army lasted from the first day to the very end of their empire. Intensifying in September 1915 with the attack on the Serbian capital Belgrade. They bombarded the city with artillery from the very beginning of the campaign, and finally the attack came on the 5th of October. Outnumbered heavily by the Austrians, the Serbs held every inch of ground to the death, stalling the Austrian crossing of the Danube for days and causing horrendous casualties. When the positions outside the capital had been overrun, commanding officer major Gavrilović made his infamous speech "Soldiers, exactly at three o’clock, the enemy is to be crushed by your fierce charge, destroyed by your grenades and bayonets. The honour of Belgrade, our capital, must not be stained.
Soldiers! Heroes! The supreme command has erased our regiment from its records. Our regiment has been sacrificed for the honour of Belgrade and the motherland. Therefore, you no longer need to worry about your lives: they no longer exist. So, forward to glory! For King and country! Long live the King, Long live Belgrade!”
The ragged Serbs charged out of their positions, only to be met by the rattle of the Austrian Maxims.
After the battle, French Marshall Franchet d’Espèrey awarded the Legion of Honour to the Serbian capital for their valiant defence.
