Why is February Black History Month? Who came up with the idea?

video thumbnail
In this episode of Let’s Teach, I’ll explain exactly why Black History Month is celebrated in February. We can’t talk about Black History month without getting to know a historian named Carter G. Woodson, who is widely regarded as the pioneer of the field of African-American studies. In the early 20th century, he co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History – or “ASNLH,” for short – after being inspired by the national celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, which lasted for three whole weeks.

The ASNLH began as a way to encourage American scholars to examine Black history, which was a subject that had long been ignored by academia. Their efforts to get this topic into the mainstream increased throughout the years, and in 1926, they, along with Woodson, launched “Negro History Week.”
