Lucius Licinius Murena, Triumphator 81 BCE |
|
One of Sulla's best and most senior legates, Murena won a place in the narratives of Plutarch and Appian for his role in the First and Second Mithridatic Wars. Awarded a triumph on dubious grounds in 81, Murena is an interesting historical figure with a few points of broader historical significance. So far as I am aware, Murena is the only Roman legate in the Republican period to wage a full-scale war on his own initiative. Further, the circumstances of his triumph are odd enough that they force us to reexamine our assumptions about how and why the Senate awarded triumphs to its members.
