The Story of Giannis Antetokounmpo |
|
In a three-year span, Giannis Antetokounmpo has been an MVP, defensive player of the year and now in NBA champion. He was once an overlooked overseas prospect who can maybe turn into something more in the NBA and that's exactly what he's done. You could also say that the Greek freak is one of the most disrespected superstars in the game today. People, even other NBA players such as James Harden have often criticize how Giannis can't shoot and it's just a tall guy who can just run into the paint every play. Had he have played in any other era other than the shooting era of today, it wouldn't be looked at like that, but you still can't question how dominant Giannis has become. His basketball journey started all the way in Athens, Greece which is where his family moved to after leaving Nigeria. Giannis would begin playing for a semi pro team as a part of his Greek basketball league. From there he would also play in other places overseas after turning 18 years old. Giannis within make himself eligible for the 2013 NBA draft were scouts liked his wingspan, mobility and ability to change direction of the dribble. His athleticism can help him cover multiple positions on the floor while also having a high basketball IQ and good passing skills as well.
While he had a lot of upside,Scouts didn't know how he was skinny and needed to get bigger and at this point noted how he basically had no jumpshot. That would all play a role into him being the 15th pick taken by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2013 NBA draft. Making his debut while still being just 18 years old, Giannis was joining a Bucs team who had just gone 38-44 with 27-year-old Monte Ellis as their leading scorer. Wow Milwaukee me Larry drew the new head coach, Giannis as a rookie played in 77 games averaging seven points, for rebounds in to assist while the Bucks finished with the worst record in the NBA going 15- 67. His rookie season was still well enough for him to make the NBA all rookie second team at least. With Larry Drew gone and Jason Kidd now in his head coach, both Giannis and the Bucks saw great improvement. In his first year alongside Khris Middleton, he would put up 13 points, three essays, seven rebounds and one block a night. Great improvements from his rookie year. The books as a team also finished 41- 41 which was well enough to be a six seed in the east. While the Bucks got taken out in six games, it was good to have two future franchise players get playoff experience at such a young age. It was only up from here but there were still some things in the books organization to fix along the way. With Middleton now being the team's leading scorer with 18 points a game, Giannis was right behind him. While averaging 17 points, eight rebounds, forces, when steal and block, the Greek Freak would become the youngest Milwaukee Buck to record a triple double with 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over the Lakers while still being just 21 years old. Even though he was continuing to make strides in his game, the Milwaukee Bucks as a team took steps backwards. Compared to the six seed finish the year before, the 2016 Bucks under second year Jason Kidd finished 33-44 missing the playoffs all together. Despite the overall team struggles, Giannis Antetokounmpo approved up to this point that he was going to be an all-star, so he be given a four-year $100 million contract extension. The 2017 season is where he'd earn his first All-Star selection and become the youngest Milwaukee buck to ever start in an All-Star game still being 22 years old. This, on top of winning a player of the month and leading the team in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and becoming the first player in NBA history to finish top 20 in all major stats would not only help him win the most improved player award but also be second team all NBA. Averaging 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks and steals helped the box finish as a six seed once again. 25 points a game in a series versus the Raptors got Milwaukee two games but they were still more work to be done. The Greek freak would only build on his success by getting more triple doubles and setting new career highs with 40+ points in the 2018 season. Despite his coach Jason Kidd being fired, Giannis would still continue to improve making his second I'll start appearance averaging 27 points, 10 rebounds, five assist and one steal and block. Even though the Bucks won two more games compared to the year before, they would actually finish in a lower seed at seven to face the Boston Celtics.
