Statues are being toppled and removed globally amid worldwide anti-racism protests in the wake of the death in US police custody of George Floyd. Among targets of anti-racism groups is Jean-Baptiste Colbert, controller-general of France's finances under King Louis XIV. It was him who drew up the "Code Noir" that defined the conditions for slavery.
