Mayo Clinic Dolores Jean Lavins Center for Humanities in Medicine offers the Arts at the Bedside Program to patients and family members in both Mayo Clinic hospitals. Professional and staff artists are available to meet with patients in their rooms to provide interactive arts activities as distraction and enhancement experiences. The Visual Arts at the Bedside Program features an artist who brings materials such as watercolor, colored pencils, collage paper, yarn and clay to the patient, then guides the patient through the process of creating an easy project. Because the sessions are individualized, the art project may be customized to meet the interests of the patient. Artists are able to work with most patients, even those in isolation. The highest levels of patient safety are always observed; art materials are disinfected before and after each use.

In the Writing at the Bedside Program, authors are available to meet with patients and/or family members who have an interest in using creative or reflective writing as a healing tool. Our authors are poets, novelists, historical journalists, essayists and memoirists who help guide patients through whatever type of writing experience they choose. Patients have relied on our authors for help in beginning a journal of their healing process, finishing a writing project begun before hospital admission, or in creating legacy letters for their families.

Music at the Bedside is provided by professional, staff and volunteer musicians who perform mini-concerts in patient/lounge areas, or come to the bedside to provide a personalized short program of music. Our musicians offer soothing and uplifting entertainment and distraction for patients. For a more in-depth exploration of healing through music, a music therapist is available on referral by a provider.

Funded by generous benefactors, there is never a charge to participate. Family members as well as patients are welcome to participate in all Arts at the Bedside Programs.
