During the 2018-2019 academic year, Watson Institute faculty, students, and visitors produced top-notch research, engaged in conversations around critical global issues, and led efforts to create solutions to our most pressing policy challenges.

Through the Distinguished Lecture Series and events organized by our regional-focused centers and initiatives, Watson hosted thought leaders from all corners of government and NGOs, including President of the World Bank Jim Kim '82, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Secretary John Kerry, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Chairman of the DNC Tom Perez, and former RNC chair Michael Steele. Watson's podcast expanded with the launch of Brazil Unfiltered and the continued growth of Trending Globally. A determined focus on teaching and student-centered learning was demonstrated through special seminars and workshops led by faculty and visitors such as Ambassador Richard Boucher, community development expert Angela Blanchard, Tom Perez, Michael Steele, and former CNN president Jon Klein. Impactful research from the Costs of War project continued to gather national attention.

The opening of Stephen Robert '62 Hall in December 2018, expands the physical footprint of Brown’s growing Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, adding 23,000 square feet of faculty office space, classrooms, study areas and event venues. In the six months since it opened its doors, the new Watson Institute building has become a prime destination on campus and supported an equally ambitious programmatic expansion underway at the institute.
