Miyamoto Musashi was the greatest of the great swordsmen to ever come out of the nation of Japan. His story, which has become the oriental films of countless swordsmen. He defeated sixty opponents in one on one battle after another, yet his greatest legacy is his original work, The Book of Five Rings.

Miyamoto Musashi was born on 1584 in the village of Miyamoto in the Yoshino district of Mimisaka Province in Japan. Musashi was born into nobility with his mother, who died giving birth to him. His father, Muni was a warrior in Shin Man Clan, who had become an expert in the fighting arts. Before the birth of Miyamoto Musashi, Japan had seen a century of successive battles. This strife was followed during his lifetime by a period of unification, then the establishment of the Edo shogunate at the beginning of the seventeenth century.

Musashi's life was like a warrior from the beginning. He engaged in training until the age of 20, in an era which saw the unification of Japanese society, creating a more modern, orderly system.

After visiting Kyoto at age 21, until 29, he traveled the country honing his combat skills. The Battle of Sekigahara (1600) led to the establishment of the Tokugawa regime; however, there was a period of disquiet with the forces of the previous administration.

From the age of 30 to 59, he pursued the true art of war as a guest swordsman under the patronage of various daimyō. During this period, his adopted son, Miyamoto Iori, became chief retainer of his feudal domain. The Battle of Osaka (1615) was followed by the establishment of the shogunate feudal system.

In his final years, from age 60 on, he chronicled his life in Gorin no sho. An era was ushered in of younger shōgun and daimyō who had not experienced battle.

Miyamoto Musashi died on May 19, 1645. He was buried (at his request) using a complete War Dress (yoroi armor) in the Yuji village, near to Iwato Mount. It is recalled that during his funeral services a hard lightning bolt stroke at the sky.
