To write songs you will need level 8 of the respective instrument i.e. piano, guitar, violin. Then simply click on the instrument and select 'write' before choosing a genre of song to write. This will create sheet music in the sim's inventory. If your sim doesn't write the song in one go, then you will need to use the sheet music in your sim's inventory to resume writing that song.

Writing lyrics is the same, but requires level 8 of the singing skill, and uses a smaller range of instruments (such as the DigiRAD Keyboard) or the microphone stand to write them.

At level 9 of the instrument or singing skill you can license songs and lyrics using your mailbox, which provides royalties for a week. You can only publish one at a time, but you can simultaneously publish one song and one set of lyrics.
